Martynas and Giedre at Res Artis

CAUCULT team members were invited to the conference “Res Artis”

Martynas Stukas and Giedre Simanauskaite from Asocciation of Non-formal education in Lithuania on 2-5 October took a part in Res Artis conference – Escape and Engagement. Residencies as Hosts, Producers and Promoters.

Residencies are among the few places left where artists can escape the pressures of the market, devote time to themselves, engage the other and sally forth for research and experiments that do not happen in their daily studio practice. Although the phenomenon of artistic residencies started more than one hundred and fifty years ago with an aim to escape the routine, the facet of escape is still one of the most important raison d`être for residencies. The location (remoteness and exoticism), travelling, and hospitality are therefore the focus of discussion on the present and the future of residencies. More so, residencies are no longer about artists alone. They increasingly engage in artistic, social, or political life. This Res Artis meeting aimed to encouraged experienced and emerging residency operators to look for most relevant answers to the above questions and for a new meaning of the old phenomenon.

“We asked the organizers how they got to know CAUCULT and why we got invited if we do not host artists for residence” – said Martynas Stukas, responsible for the CAUCULT project monitoring. “They said that we have a network of people in the South Caucasus and that’s true – we work directly with Key Dialogue Workers and they have their own network of artists, producers and art promoters”. So if you or your community members are interested to stay in artist residence or you are willing to join artist residence network as curators or promoter, please check http://www.resartis.org/ .  In Lithuania there are five places hosting artists: Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, Nida Art Colony, Gallery of photography in Kaunas, Rupert Art and Education Centre and Art Printing House in Vilnius.
